Headphones E80S In-Ear-Monitor (Earbuds)

I lost my JVC FRD-80 on a recent flight and wanted a better replacement.

After lots of online research (who doesn't?), I finally ordered this directly from SoundMagic for £10 cheaper than Amazon.

The unit is delightfully light and the copper coloured casing looks cool.  The twisted wire is thin and waxy which is both lightweight and less prone to tangle. It's also great for not transmitting cable noise. The remote button and mic is of good quality and feels solid, unlike the plasticky JVC. As with the JVC, the A-B switch has no effect on function or quality. SoundMagic includes 3 sets of Comply foam plugs as well as the usual silicon ones.

Straight to the heart of the matter. In two words, flat response. Unlike the JVC which is more V-shaped with boosted bass and treble and slightly recessed mid. E80S is more like a studio monitor with very open and neutral sound but ultimately lacking low bass grunt, for me. Bass is fast and tight but just doesn’t extend low enough. Low bass is hinted at so may it extends there but just not enough of it. Maybe the physical opening might be limited sound pressure. I repurchased the same JVC model just to satisfy the curiosity. Yes more thumping bass. Warmer but surprisingly harsh treble that I failed to recall with my last pair. Maybe that was well broken-in.

E80S treble is extended and clear but not fatiguing. With the Comply foam and light weight cans, the fit is secure and facilitates prolonged listening. Separation is good and there's an air to the sound that's lacking in the JVC. Definitely one of the more revealing IEM without piercing your ear drums. Soundstage and imaging is really good with central vocals.

Isolation is average but I enjoy wearing it more because of the low cable noise and as soon as the music plays. 60 degree angled jack is a good idea. Better than the other two options.

The more I listen to other IEMs, the more I realise how listenable and how good E80 is in every department. Its strength is strangely how it has no obvious weakness. Mainly how the bass effortlessly thumps along without much fuss. It's not strong bass but goes deep and always noticeable.

Pros:
Flat response.
Open and neutral sound.
Great resolution.
Non-fatiguing
Lightweight
Non-existent cable noise.

Cons:
Lacks punch.
Isolation could be better.
